How to Set Up Google Authorship

With the launch of Google Authorship, you can now link your original writing (with your byline) to your Google+ profile in a few easy steps. Your name and Google+ profile picture will pop up next to any content you publish online, helping you position yourself as an expert in your field and making your content stand out in search engine result pages.

You can set up Google Authorship in either of two easy ways, both of which require a Google+ profile. Make sure you have a profile photo with a recognizable headshot and that a byline containing your name appears on each page of your content (for example, By John Doe). Your byline name needs to match the name on your Google+ profile, that way Google can infer authorship of articles written by you. Google Authorship serves as the link between the articles you write and your Google+ profile.

Here's how you get going with Authorship if your e-mail address and your content are on the same domain:

  1. Go to plus.google.com/authorship.

  2. Type in the e-mail address that's on the same domain as your content and click Signup for Authorship.

For example, if John Doe writes articles on xyz.com and has an e-mail associated with that domain such as johndoe@xyz.com, you would type in "johndoe@xyz.com."

Domain names are unique identifiers that serve as addresses for web pages on the Internet. Generic top-level domains carry commonly seen endings, such as com, org, and net.

  3. Verify the link in the e-mail you get from Google.

Google will send a verification e-mail to the e-mail address you used in Step 2. You need to click that link to prove that you own that address.

Using an e-mail address that has the same domain name as the page where your content lives makes that e-mail address registered and verified in your Google+ profile.

If you don't have an e-mail address on the same domain as your content, you can add a link from your website or page to your Google profile.

  1. Sign into Google+ and navigate to your Google+ profile.

  2. Click on the About tab from the navigation menu at the top of the screen.

  3. Scroll down until you see the Links section and click Edit.

  4. Click the Add custom link under Contributor to.

  5. Enter the name and URL for any blog or website where your bylined content lives, keeping in mind that you can add many different blog and website URLs here.

Now that you've set up Google Authorship, readers can discover your content on the web.

The more quality content you publish, the more your content has a chance of standing out in Google search results, which can lead to a higher rank by Google and encourage you to get more followers on Google+.
