How to Set Color Schemes on the Windows 8.1 Desktop

Windows 8.1 ships with 16 prebuilt designer color schemes. “Automatic” (which has a propensity to sky blue) is the scheme of choice. You can change to a different designer scheme or invent one all your own. To change color schemes, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click any empty part of the Windows desktop and choose Personalize.

    The Personalize dialog box appears.

  2. At the bottom, click the link that says Color.

    Windows opens the Color and Appearance dialog box.

  3. Choose the window color scheme that suits your fancy.

    The Automatic color setting — the one with a fanned out swatch in the upper-left corner — takes its cues from the background image.

  4. Click Save Changes.

    Your chosen window color scheme takes effect immediately.
