How to Set a Default Template in iBooks Author

To create a new iBooks Author project, you start by selecting a template, which you do by choosing File→New or pressing Command+N to open the Template Chooser. If you use the same template over and over again, you can tell iBooks Author to always use that template when creating a new project:

  1. Choose iBooks Author→Preferences.

Alternatively, you can press Command+, (comma).

The General Preferences dialog box opens.

  2. Select the Use Template option in the General pane.

A settings sheet opens, displaying a miniature version of the Template Chooser.

  3. Click the icon of the desired template to select it.

  4. Click Choose to choose the template, and then close the General Preferences dialog box.

To change the template used, reopen the General Preferences dialog box and select a different template. To stop iBooks Author from using a specific template automatically for new documents, select Show Template Chooser, rather than Use Template.

If you have iBooks Author set to use a template automatically for new documents, you can still select a new template by choosing File→New from Template Chooser or pressing Shift+Command+N (rather than the usual File→New or Command+N).

If you want to use an existing book, rather than a template, as the basis for your new book, you have several options:

  • In the Template Chooser, choose a recent file from the Open Recent pop-up menu.

  • In the Template Chooser, click the Open Existing File button, and in the Open dialog box that appears, navigate to the desired file, select it, and click Open.

  • From the menu bar, choose File→Open (or press Command+O), and then in the Open dialog box that appears, navigate to the desired file, select it, and click Open.

If you use an existing book as your template, you need to remove the contents from that book after you save the new book with a different name or to a different location. To create that copy of the book, choose File→Duplicate. Otherwise, you lose that original book’s contents and layout when you adjust the opened file.

When you create a new project from a template and know you want to use it for your book, you can save it as a book file by following these steps:

  1. Choose File→Save.

    Alternatively, you can press Command+S.

  2. (Optional) In the Save settings sheet that appears, type a new filename in the Save As field and select a new location in the settings sheet.

If you don’t see the settings sheet, click the down-pointing triangle button to the right of the Save As field.

  3. Click the Save button.

By immediately saving your project file after creating it from a template, you’re less likely to have to redo work if your Mac loses power. Although iBooks Author automatically saves files while you work on them, you need to create the specific file that you want to save, and that book file is created only after you first save the document created from a template.
