How to Resize Objects in iBooks Author

The process for resizing objects should be familiar in iBooks. When you select an object, eight selection handles appear, one on each corner and one midway along each side. You drag the handles to resize and reshape the object based on where you move the various handles.

Like in most programs, when you reshape or resize text boxes or tables, the text size for the contents are unaffected. The contents of other objects are scaled to fit within the objects’ new shape, which may cause different margins on the sides than on the top and bottom. Any outside boundary’s stroke weight and any drop shadow’s size are also unchanged, but effects such as shadows in a picture frame can also be distorted based on the new shape.

When an object (left) is resized (right), its text size doesn’t change, but other elements are resized and may have their margins adjusted.

To move an object, click and drag it to the new location. If you’re selecting a text box or table, you might have trouble dragging the object if iBooks Author selects the text inside the object and assumes you’re trying to expand that text selection. In that case, clicking and dragging from the boundary usually lets you move the object.

If you select multiple objects, iBooks Author can align them for you. Choose Format→Arrange Objects, and then choose the desired alignment from the submenu, which contains the options Left, Center, Right, Top, Middle, or Bottom. All objects are aligned with the object furthest in the direction you select. For example, if you choose Left, all selected objects are aligned to the leftmost object in the group.

You can precisely specify the size and position of a selected object by using the Metrics inspector.

  • Width and Height: Enter values in these fields or use the stepper controls to change their values.

  • X and Y: Enter values in these fields or use the stepper controls to change their values.

By default, the X and Y coordinates start at the upper-left of the page (meaning the 0,0 point is the upper-left corner of the page), but you can make that point the center of the page by going to the Preference dialog box’s Rulers pane and selecting the Place Origin at Center of Ruler check box.

  • Constrain Proportions: Select this option to keep the object’s dimensions proportional while you resize it. This option is selected by default for images and widgets, and it’s deselected by default for other objects.

  • Original Size: For images only, select this option to restore the object to its original size.
