How to Reset Internet Explorer

Just as restarting your computer often fixes minor software ills, you can attempt to repair Internet Explorer problems by performing a reset of the Internet Explorer software. Here’s how:

  1. In Internet Explorer 8, click the Tools toolbar button and choose the menu command Internet Options.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.

  3. Click the Reset button.

The Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box appears. It’s not an entertaining read.

  4. Click the Reset button in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.

    Purge! Purge! Purge!

  5. Click the Close button.

  6. Click the OK button and then:

  7. Close all open Internet Explorer windows to restart Internet Explorer.

After you restart Internet Explorer, all the add-ons and customization you completed are removed. The home page is also reset to whatever it was when you first set up your PC (such as to the manufacturer’s website or to whichever MSN or Windows Live site Microsoft is pushing). It’s as though you started Internet Explorer for the first time.

  • Resetting Internet Explorer doesn’t remove any of your bookmarks. But if you added a custom toolbar or reset the home page, you need to reconfigure those settings after resetting.

  • Running the System File Checker can also repair Internet Explorer.

  • Don’t repair or attempt to fix older versions of Internet Explorer. Instead, upgrade.
