What if the ohm reader doesn't read zero, but the breaker is off? What if the new light fixture doesn't fit onto the old fixture base?

If it doesn`t read zero, you could have another wiring issue somewhere along the circuit. If the new fixture doesn`t fit the old ceiling cut out, you should have measured it first. If in fact you ARE using the old fixture BASE....you should measure it first.

To jingles, the meter should be set to volts not ohms. There may be a small reading (millevolts) which could be a measurement from the neutral wire, nothing to worry about. I don't understand why, if you are replacing the fixture, you would use any part of the old fixture unless by the old fixture base, you mean the electrical box. If you can't tell the difference between the box and the old fixture, perhaps you should have someone more familiar with this type of task take a look. It's not brain surgery, but you have to be careful!

What a timely article. Tired of freezing out in the garage every Canadian winter so have been installing new shop with huge workbench down in our warm basement. Since I'm long retired (eyes) need lots of lighting to work by. Jingles you need Volts not Ohms the Ohms won't kill you but the Current (I) will. Remember I equals E (Volts) divided by R (Resistance)Suggest you obtain 'Good' Multimeter and DO NOT spare the bucks. Thanks Dummmies (nice piece)
