How to Reduce Junk Mail, Spam, and Other Unwanted Solicitations

Stopping solicitors takes time, but over the long-run, you save trees and protect your privacy. You can follow the steps here to reduce the majority of your junk mail, telephone solicitations, and spam. Unfortunately, companies that already have your personal and private information are allowed by law to give or sell it to others unless you expressly tell them not to do so.

To minimize solicitations:

  • Add your name and phone number to the National Do-Not-Call Registry (888-382-1222).

  • Contact the Direct Marketing Association and get removed from their solicitation lists, too.

  • Contact the major credit bureaus online and opt out of receiving preapproved credit offers sent to you. Or you can write to the three major credit bureaus and tell them that you don't want personal information about you shared for any promotional purposes. (This step reduces the number of unsolicited credit card and loan offers coming to you in the mail and thwarts would-be thieves who’d love to get their hands on one of your pre-approved credit card offers.)

    • Equifax, Options, P.O. Box 740123, Atlanta, GA 30374

    • Experian, Consumer Opt-Out, 701 Experian Parkway, Allen, TX 75013

    • TransUnion, Name Removal Option, P.O. Box 505, Woodlyn, PA 19094

  • Also write all to companies with which you do business (your utility companies, your bank, your credit-card company, insurance companies, lenders, and so on) and specifically tell them not to sell or share your personal and private information with anyone, including their affiliate companies. If you don’t proactively opt out, these companies can (and do) sell or share your personal information with others.

Included here is a form letter that you can use to notify the major credit bureaus and all the companies with which you do business that under no circumstances do you want your personal and private information sold to or shared with anybody. Send your personal equivalent of this letter to all people and companies with which you do business who may have any of your private information. Examples are folks like the following:

  • Your life insurance agent and his company

  • Your local bank

  • Your credit-card companies

  • Other lenders you may have

  • Any company with which you have investments

  • Any company from which you receive one of those mandatory Privacy Policy letters or brochures at least once a year, most likely written with legal mumbo jumbo and in the tiniest print possible on flimsy paper.

It takes some time, but you can drastically reduce the amount of unwanted solicitations, unauthorized inquiries regarding your credit history, junk mail in your mailbox, spam in your e-mail box, and computer viruses. In short, you’ll be a difficult person for identity thieves to victimize.
