How to Redirect a URL with Advanced Settings in Squarespace

On Squarespace, if you want to create a URL that is easier to remember or to redirect people from outdated URLs to newer content on your site, choose Site Manager→Settings→Advanced. The Advanced screen appears.

To use the URL mapping feature, you will need to know the following:

  • Original URL: The part of the URL after the domain (www.yourdomain.com) that someone types to be redirected to a page on your site

  • New URL: The URL to which the shortcut will be redirected

  • Redirect Type: Either a 301 or a 302 redirect

You can't redirect URL mappings to pages outside your website. The page to which you are redirecting must be hosted by Squarespace in your Squarespace website.

The URL mapping can be a new URL you made for creating an easier-to-remember URL or an old URL that used to be available on your site. Perhaps you're removing a page but want external links to that page to be redirected to another page with newer content; you can create a mapping that links the old URL to the new page.

For example, if you delete a page located at http://www.yourdomain.com/myoldpage/ and want to redirect external links to your new page at http://www.yourdomain.com/mynewpage/, you would add /myoldpage/ to the Original URL field and /mynewpage/ to the New URL field.

When you create a URL mapping, you have two options to dictate the type of redirect you are creating:

  • 301 Redirect: Indicates to search engines that the URL mapping to which you are redirecting is the new URL to be used for the content on that page. You would use this option to redirect from an outdated or a deleted URL to the active URL with current content.

  • 302 Redirect: Tells search engines that the content at the mapped URL is temporary. You can use this option to point the URL mapping to a page and then change it to point to another page later. Search engines will know to come back to the page to index the content again and on a routine basis.

To add mappings in the Advanced screen, you use a plain text format, with one mapping per line:

/original-URL/ -> /new-URL/ redirect-type

Using our example, the following is what you would enter as the URL mapping in the text box in the Advanced screen if you wanted the redirect to be permanent (301 Redirect):

/myoldpage/ -> /mynewpage/ 301

You can add as many URL mappings to your site as needed. Make sure any mappings you create are site-relative URLs.
