How to Play Your iPod or iPhone Using iTunes

You can play the songs, videos, podcasts, and other content on your iPod or iPhone through iTunes. You can even play your friend’s iPod or iPhone content by connecting it to your computer.

  1. Select the iPod or iPhone name in the iTunes Source pane in the Devices section (if it isn’t already selected).

The device summary page appears, replacing List view or Browse view.

  2. Set the iPod or iPhone to manually manage music and videos.

The summary page offers the option to set the iPod or iPhone to manage music and videos manually. (The iPod or iPhone synchronizes automatically by default, but you can change that.)

  3. Click Apply to apply the change.

Click the Apply button in the lower-right corner of the summary page to apply the option change to manual.

  4. Click the triangle next to the iPod or iPhone name to see its playlists and contents; then select Music (underneath the iPod or iPhone name).

The list of songs on the iPod or iPhone appears in the List pane. You can scroll or browse its library just like you can in the main iTunes library.

  5. (Optional) View the iPod playlists.

Scroll the iTunes window to view the playlists on the iPod or iPhone in the Source pane.

  6. Select an item in the iPod song list and then click the iTunes Play button.
