How to Obtain a Domain from Google Blogger

8 of 8 in Series: The Essentials of Setting Up a Google Blogger Blog

When you have a blog with Google Blogger but want your own domain, Blogger makes it easy to obtain a domain and redirect your blog to it directly from your Blogger dashboard:

1

Click the Settings link for the appropriate blog from the home page of your Blogger dashboard.

The main Settings page opens within your dashboard.

2

Select the Publishing tab from the top navigation bar on the Settings page.

The Publishing page opens, where you can obtain your custom domain from Blogger.

3

Select the Custom Domain link.

A new section of the page opens, labeled Buy a Domain for Your Blog.

4

Enter the domain name you want to purchase in the text box labeled What Address Would You Like Your Blog to Have, and then click the Check Availability button.

Blogger responds and tells you whether the requested domain name is available. If it's not available, enter a different domain name and click the Check Availability button again.

5

When you find an available domain you like, select the appropriate Google Checkout button to purchase the domain.

When you switch to a custom domain, your old URL, which included the .blogspot.com extension, is automatically redirected to your new domain, so visitors who bookmarked your blog can still find it.

You have to pay a fee to obtain a custom domain name. Blogger charges you $10 to register a domain name through a Google partner for one year. You must renew your registration when the one-year registration period is over.
