How to Modify Settings for Folders and Link Page Types on Squarespace

The folder and link page types on Squarespace are not pages on your site, but they help you structure a more robust navigation. Folders are useful for organizing pages within your navigation. Links can help you direct people to specific areas of your site or to other places on the web.

So what exactly can you do with these features? Let’s find out.

How to modify folders

The folder is probably the simplest of any Squarespace item in Content Manager. You add a folder the same way you add any page to your Squarespace site: by clicking the Add Page link in Content Manager. When you add a folder, you choose a folder name and a URL name.

If you want to modify the folder’s settings, do the following:

  1. Hover your mouse cursor over the folder's name in the Navigation column, and then click the gear icon that appears.

The gear icon appears next to the x on the far right.

  2. If you want to rename the folder, type a new name in the white text field.

  3. If you want to rename the folder URL, type a new name in the gray text field below the folder name.

Changing the folder URL will change the link to any page in the folder.

You can delete a folder in two ways:

  • Hover your cursor over the folder name in the Navigation column, and then click the x that appears.

  • Hover your cursor over the folder's name in the Navigation column, click the gear icon that appears, and then click the Delete button.

When you perform either of the deletion methods, you must confirm the deletion in the Delete Folder dialog box.

Deleting a folder will delete the pages in the folder. So make sure you either want to delete the pages in the folder or have moved the pages to another location in your navigation.

Disabling a folder is just as easy as deleting it:

  1. Hover your cursor over the folder's name in the Navigation column, and click the gear icon that appears.

  2. Click the Disable button.

In the dialog box that appears, confirm disabling of the folder.

Disabling a folder only prevents the folder from appearing in your navigation. Any pages in the folder are not disabled and can still be accessed by a direct link.

How to modify link item settings

Adding links to your navigation can be a useful way to help direct people to specific web pages, whether or not the pages are on your site. Link pages do not have a page of their own; they simply allow you to link somewhere else.

You add a link item as you would a page:

  1. Hover your cursor over a link item in the Navigation column, and click the gear icon that appears.

  2. Name the link.

This is the name that will appear in your navigation.

  3. Add the URL by selecting Click to Add URL (below the link name) and choosing one of the following:

    • External: Type the URL for a web page that you want to link. Make sure you use the entire URL, including http://. To visit the URL you've typed, click the diagonal arrow to the far right of the URL field. If you want the link to open in a new window when someone clicks it, select the New Window option.

    • Files: Upload a new file to your site or select a file you've uploaded previously on another page of your site.

    • Content: Select a page to link to on your site.

If a link already appears in the link URL field, you can delete it by clicking the trash can icon on the far right of the field.

  4. Click the Save button to save your link.

If you need to delete or remove a link you’ve created, do one of the following:

  • Hover your cursor over the link in the Navigation column, and then click the x that appears.

  • Hover your cursor over the link in the Navigation column, click the gear icon that appears, and then click the Remove Link button.

Both removal methods require that you confirm the deletion in the Delete Link dialog box. Removing a link will delete the link from your navigation.
