How to Modify an Existing Template in Word 2007

You can modify a Word 2007 template in two ways: You can either make changes directly in the template, or you can modify it indirectly by making changes to a document that is based on the template. The second way only applies some changes to the template, such as to styles.

Modify an existing Word 2007 template

  1. Choose Office→Open to call up the Open dialog box.

  2. In the Files of Type list box, choose Document Templates.

  3. Locate and select the template you want to modify.

  4. Click Open to open the template.

  5. Make any changes you want.

  6. When you are done, choose Office→Save to save the changes.

Modify an existing Word 2007 template through a document

  1. Open a document based on the template.

  2. Change those elements of the document stored in the template rather than in the document.

Any text you add to the document and any direct formatting you apply to the document doesn’t affect the template. However, when you modify a style, you have the option of applying the change to styles in the current document or to styles in the template. If you apply the change only to the current document, the change doesn’t affect other documents created from the template.

  3. When you are done, choose Office→Save to save the changes.
