Every knitted fabric is made up of stitches and rows. Gauge is the number of stitches and rows it takes to make 1 square inch of knitted fabric. The gauge is affected by the yarn you use, the needle size, and the stitch pattern, and being able to measure the gauge is important if you're knitting something that has to be a specific size.
