How to Manage Notes with the OneNote Web App

OneNote web App is the catch-all “if you can’t do it in the mobile version, do it here” solution for mobile OneNote users who don’t own or currently have access to the desktop version of the app, which is by far the most functional version.

How to make new notes with OneNote web App

You can create a new note, section, or notebook easily in OneNote web App.

How to create a new notebook

To create a new notebook for use in the OneNote web App, you must be logged in to SkyDrive.com. Here’s how:

  1. While logged in to SkyDrive.com, from the top of the screen, select Create→OneNote Notebook.

A pop-up menu appears with a text field and a default name for the selected notebook.

  2. Type a name for your notebook and then click or tap Create.

Your new notebook appears in the OneNote web App.

How to create a new section

To create a new section, select the Insert tab and click or tap the New Section button. The new section will be named Untitled Section; you can rename it as you wish.

You can also right-click or press and hold the name of the section above the one you want to add and choose New Section from the context menu. The new section will be created below the first section.

How to create a new note

To create a new note page, click or tap the plus symbol to the right of the section name you want the note to fall under in the bar at the left. The new page will be named Untitled Page; you can rename it as you wish.

You can also right-click or press and hold the name of the section and choose New Page from the context menu.

How to open existing notes with OneNote web App

Opening a notebook, section, or page is simple, but the process for doing so depends on which one you’re opening — notebooks must be opened in the SkyDrive.com interface, whereas sections and pages must be opened in OneNote web App.

How to open a notebook

To use OneNote web App to edit a note, you must open a notebook in the SkyDrive.com interface. Follow these steps to open a notebook:

  1. Log in to SkyDrive.com and navigate (if necessary) to the folder containing the notebook you want to open.

Your cursor turns into a hand, unless you’re hovering over the check box in the upper-right corner.

  2. Click or tap the item.

The file opens in OneNote web App.

How to open a section or page

To open a section or page, select the name of the section you want to see while viewing the notebook containing the section or page. Similarly, with the section containing the chosen note open, just select the name of the page, and it opens in the pane at the right.
