How to Make Yuletide Biscuits

7 of 17 in Series: How to Plan and Shop for a Christmas Open House

Biscuits are easy to make and these Yuletide biscuits are great for your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner in place of store-bought breads. But you can serve them with almost any dinner or brunch to add a festive touch.

Tender, melt in your mouth biscuits require a light hand during mixing — in other words, mix them delicately!

Yuletide Biscuits

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 10 minutes

Yield: 10 biscuits

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

8 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

3/4 cup whole milk

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Cut the butter in with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture is uniform and has the texture of coarse sand. Gently stir in the milk until the dough just comes together.

  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly to bring the batter together. Gently pat out into a 1/2-inch thick rectangle (approximately 10 x 7 inches). Cut into 10 squares using a sharp, floured knife.

  4. Transfer the biscuits onto a baking sheet; you may gently shape them into rounds if desired. If you like biscuits with browned sides, set them on the sheet so that they’re not touching. If you like soft sides, place them very close to one another so that they’re just touching.

  5. Bake the biscuits for about 10 minutes, until they’re lightly browned on the top and bottom. Serve immediately.
