How to Make Articles Open in New Windows in Joomla CMS

If you are the administrator for a website that runs on the Joomla content management system (CMS), you will likely encounter a need to have a new browser window open when a user clicks a certain menu item. To set up that behavior in Joomla, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Menus→Menu Manager in any back-end page to open Menu Manager.

    The Menu Manager opens.

  2. Click the Menu Items tab located near the top-left corner of the Menu Manager window.

    Menu Manager: Menu Items opens.

  3. Open the pertinent menu item by clicking it.

  4. Choose a target window from the Target Window drop-down menu.

If you want to open a new browser window without an address bar, toolbars, or menu bar, choose New Window without Navigation.

For this exercise, choose New Window with Navigation so the window will offer all those navigation bars.

  5. Click the Save or Save & Close button.

Now when the user clicks the menu item, a list of articles in that category opens in a new window. When the user clicks the name of an individual article, however, the article appears in that same window.
