How to Knit Thermal Sport Socks

Learn how to knit these toe-up socks made of sport weight yarn. These thermal sport socks consist of a stretchy waffle pattern with a short-row heel and twisted ribbing and are both comfortable and stylish. You work these socks on double-pointed needles.

  • Size:

    W Med (M Med)

    Finished Foot Circumference: 8 (9) inches

    For custom sizing, you can use the waffle patt over any multiple of 4 sts. Length is adjustable.

  • Materials:

    • 1 (2) skein(s) Louet Gems Sport Weight (100% merino wool, 225 yd./ 100g) in Teal

    • US 2 (2.75mm) dpns or size needed to obtain gauge

    • Tapestry needle

  • Gauge:

    7.5 sts and 10 rounds = 1 inch square in St st

  • Pattern stitches:

    • Waffle pattern (instep)

      Rounds 1 and 2: * K2, p2 *, rep from * to * around (for instep, end with k2).

      Round 3: Knit.

      Round 4: Purl.

      Repeat rounds 1–4 for patt.

    • 1 x 1 twisted ribbing:

    • Round 1: * K1 tbl, p1 *, rep from * to * around.

    • Repeat this round for patt.

You begin this sock at the toe and work up.

  1. CO 10 wraps (20 sts) using Eastern Cast-On.

  2. Knit sts on the top needle, rotate, and knit sts on the bottom needle to complete the CO.

  3. Round 1:

    Needle 1: Kfb, k4.

    Needle 2: K4, kfb.

    Needle 3: Rep Needle 1.

    Needle 4: Rep Needle 2.

  4. Round 2:

    Needle 1: K1, m1, k to end of needle.

    Needle 2: K to last st, m1, k1.

    Needle 3: Rep Needle 1.

    Needle 4: Rep Needle 2.

  5. Round 3: Knit1 round plain.

  6. Rep rounds 2 and 3 until 60 (68) sts rem.

  7. Next round: Work round 1 of Waffle Patt over 30 (34) sts of instep, k to end of round.

  8. Work even in Waffle Patt over instep until piece measures 7 (8) inches from tip of toe, end with round 4 of Waffle Patt, beg heel with Needle 3.

Work the short-row heel.

  1. Work the heel over 30 (34) sts.

  2. Row 1 (RS): K 29 (33) sts onto one needle. Wrap the next st and turn.

  3. Row 2 (WS): P 28 (32) sts. Wrap the next st and turn.

  4. Row 3: K to 1 before previously wrapped st. Wrap the next st and turn.

  5. Row 4: P to 1 before previously wrapped st. Wrap the next st and turn.

  6. Rep rows 3 and 4 until 12 sts rem unwrapped in the middle of the heel.

Pick up the wraps.

  1. Row 1 (RS): K to wrapped st. Pick up wrap and work together with st. Wrap the next st and turn.

  2. Row 2 (WS): P to wrapped st. Pick up wrap and work together with st. Wrap the next st and turn.

  3. Row 3: K to double-wrapped st. Pick up both wraps and work together with st. Wrap the next st and turn.

  4. Row 4: P to double-wrapped st. Pick up both wraps and work together with st. Wrap the next st and turn.

  5. Rep rows 3 and 4 until you have worked all wrapped sts. Do not wrap after you pick up the last double-wraps.

Now work the leg and cuff.

  1. Next Round: Work Waffle Patt over all 60 (68) sts.

  2. Work even in patt until leg measures 4 (5) inches from heel.

  3. Work 1 inch of Twisted Rib.

  4. Bind off in patt.

  5. Weave in ends and block.
