How to Insert Images from the Web into a WordPress Post or Page

Adding images to a post or page is easy with the WordPress image uploader (via the Add an Image dialog box). You can add images in two ways — either from a location on the web (URL) or from your computer.

1

From the Dashboard, choose Pages→Add New to add an image to your page. If you want to insert the image in a blog post, choose Posts→Add New.

The Add New Page page (or Add New Post page) appears.

2

Click the Add an Image icon, which is the first icon to the right of Upload/Insert.

If you experience difficulties with the image uploader, click the Browser Uploader link in the Add an Image box, and you can use a non-Flash uploader to transfer your files.

3

Click the From URL tab in the Add an Image dialog box.

The Add Media File from URL window opens.

4

Type the URL of the image in the Image URL text box.

Type the full URL, including the http:// and www. portions of the address. You can find the URL of any image on the web by right-clicking (Windows) or Control-clicking (Mac), and then choosing Properties.

5

Type a title for the image in the Image Title text box and then type a description of the image in the Alternative Text text box.

The alternative text (or ALT tags) shows in a browser if the image doesn’t load properly; it gives the visitor to your site a description of what the image is.

6

(Optional) Type the image caption in the Image Caption text box.

The words you type here display below the image on your site as a caption. (WordPress automatically adds a class called wp-caption in the markup — you can use this class in your CSS to provide a style for the image captions on your site.)

7

Choose an alignment option by selecting the None, Left, Center, or Right radio button.

Your choice affects how the image is aligned.

8

Type the URL you want the image linked to.

If you choose None, then readers can’t click the image. If you choose Link to Image, readers can click through to the direct image itself.

9

Click the Insert into Page (or Insert into Post) button.

The HTML markup for the image is inserted into the body of your page or post.
