How to Get Your Copy of Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 is a free update for Windows 8. If your PC is already running Windows 8, you’ll get the Windows 8.1 update through the Windows Store. If your PC is running an earlier version of Windows, you’ll need to buy a copy of Windows 8.1 from your favorite online retailer or brick-and-mortar store.

Some older hardware and software may not be compatible with Windows 8.1, so you’ll need to check to make sure that the applications you need are either compatible or can be upgraded before you move to Windows 8.1.

If no upgrade or replacement is possible, you’ll need to evaluate your situation to determine if you can find an alternative solution. Because each case is different, only you can decide if the Windows 8.1 update is right for you.

Windows 8.1 includes a very handy app called Windows Easy Transfer that you can use to transfer user accounts, documents, music, e-mail, pictures, and videos from a PC that is running Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows 7. You’ll find the Windows Easy Transfer app on the Windows 8.1 Start screen.
