How to Get Directions on an Android Phone

Thanks to its various direction and navigation features, the Maps app on an Android phone is waiting to be your copilot. It’s just like having a backseat driver, but one who knows where they’re going and — bonus — who has a Mute option.

One command that’s associated with location displays in the Maps app is Get Directions. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Touch the location’s cartoon bubble displayed by an address, a contact, or a business or from the result of a map search.

  2. Touch the Directions button.

You see the Directions screen. The information is already filled out, including your current location as the starting point.

  3. Choose a method of transportation.

The four methods are car, public transportation, bicycle, and walking.

  4. Touch the Get Directions button.

You see a map with a blue line detailing your journey. Use the zoom controls to make the map larger, if necessary.

  5. Follow the blue line.

If you’d rather see a list of directions, touch the List button on the map. You can switch back to Map view (the one with the blue line) by touching the Map button.

  • The Maps app alerts you to toll roads on the specified route. As you travel, you can choose alternative, nontoll routes, if they’re available. You’re prompted to switch routes during navigation.

  • You may not get perfect directions from the Maps app, but for places you’ve never visited, it’s a useful tool.

  • To receive vocal directions, touch the Navigation button.
