How to Format Line Charts in iBooks Author
To create a chart in iBooks Author, use the Charts icon menu in the toolbar to choose the desired chart type (there are 19 types). Or you can choose Insert→Chart and then choose the desired chart type from the submenu that appears. iBooks Author creates a chart that uses sample data. It also displays the Chart inspector and the Chart Data Editor panel.
The iBooks Author Chart inspector has a Chart pane for line charts with two options — Show Title and Show Legend — that work the same as they do for bar charts:
Show Title: The word Title appears above the chart, and you can edit it, as desired, by double-clicking it and entering (or pasting) your text.
Show Legend: If you don’t want a legend to appear, deselect this option.
The Series pane differs from the one for bar charts in several respects:
Data Symbol: This pop-up menu lets you choose the type of indicator for the points on the line; it offers five shapes for line charts, as well as the option to have no point indicator. The adjacent field and stepper controls let you control the size of the point indicators.
Connect Points: This pop-up menu lets you choose whether the lines between data points are straight or curved.
Value Labels: This option offers two sets of icon buttons to position the labels on line charts: Left, Center, and Right for horizontal positioning and Above, Middle, and Below for vertical positioning. You set the vertical and horizontal positions separately, which gives you nine possible locations for the labels.
Trendline: The Trendline subpane’s options are the same as for 2D bar charts (and are likewise available only for 2D line charts).
iBooks Author lets you create bar-and-line charts that let you specify for each data series whether it appears as a line, bars, or an area: Click a data series’ element in your chart, and then choose the desired display type from the Series pop-up menu: Column, Line, or Area.
The Chart and Axis panes for mixed charts are the same as for bar charts. But the Series pane works differently to handle the mixture of presentation types:
Bar display: The options for a bar series are the same as for bar charts.
Line display: The options for a line series are the same as for line charts.
Area display: The options for an area are the same as for regular area charts.
If you create a two-axis mixed chart, one additional control appears in the Series pane: the Plot On pop-up menu, which lets you specify which of the two y axes the chart’s bars, lines, and areas are plotted against (as well as which y axis appears).
