How to Format Documents in the Pages App for iPad

Pages for iPad gives you powerful tools for creating, editing, and formatting documents that may be complex or lengthy. Pages also gives you some tools that can come in very handy for specific tasks that apply to even short and simple documents. The formatting of a Pages document includes page headers and footers, page numbers, and backgrounds that appear on all of the pages. Here's how to proceed:

  1. With a Pages document open, tap Tools.

  2. Tap the Document Setup option.

You'll be in a blueprint-like section that is markedly different.

  3. Tap a header or footer to customize it.

You have three sections in each one that you can use as you see fit. People often use them for author, title, version number, page number, and the like. Just type your text in the section you want to customize.

  4. If you'd like to add page numbers to your document, tap in the section you want to use for the page number. Then tap the # in the top-right corner of the screen.

The # is only shown when you have selected a header or footer. You can choose the format of the page numbers. Simply tap the style you prefer.

  5. Set the outer limits of the area for the page content (as well as for header and footer) by dragging the outline.

These settings determine the printable area of your document on the page. Margins you set with the ruler define this area.

  6. Tap the bottom-right corner of the page in the blueprint to select a predefined paper size.

Tap US Letter to print on 8.5-x-11-inch paper or A4 to print on standard European letter paper.

  7. Tap Done in the upper-left corner.

Now that your page is set up, you're ready to finish entering text in your document and print it when it's done.
