How to Find Joomla Extensions

The main source of Joomla extensions can be found at the Joomla Extensions Directory, often referred to as the JED.

You can also reach the Joomla extensions site from the Joomla home page by clicking the Extensions link in the horizontal navigation bar on the site’s front page.

Over 6,200 extensions are available for download from the site. Another thing that makes the site so great is that each extension has user-feedback ratings. If you see an extension with four or more stars and many votes, many people have found it to be a good one. On the other hand, if you find an extension with many votes and zero stars (as you will), don’t use it.

Use the JED search box

Normally, when you go to the site, you have a particular kind of extension in mind and can enter what you’re looking for in the search box. Clicking one of the results of your search opens the extension’s page where you can read an in-depth description of the extension, user reviews, and if you’re still convinced it’s the extension you’re looking for, download it for installation on your site.

Browse by categories in the Joomla Extension Directory

You can also browse by category, which is very useful if you know what kind of extension you’re looking for. Here are the extension categories:

Access & Security Administration Ads & Affiliates
Calendars & Events Clients & Communities Communication
Contacts & Feedback Content Sharing Core Enhancements Directory & Documentation
e-Commerce Editing Extension Specific
Financial Hosting & Servers Languages
Living Maps & Weather Migration & Conversion
Miscellaneous Mobile Multimedia
News Display News Production Photos & Images
Search & Indexing Site Management Social web
Sports & Games Structure & Navigation Style & Design
Tools Vertical Markets

If you’ve got a specific type of extension you want in mind, it’s often easiest to browse by category.

Browse by links in the JED

Another way to find good extensions is to browse the links on the left-hand side of any page of the JED:

  • New Extensions

  • Recently Updated

  • Most Favored

  • Editor’s Pick

  • Popular Extensions

  • Top Rated

  • Most Rated

  • Most Reviewed

In practice, the Editor’s Pick, Most Popular Extensions, and Top Rated Extensions pages list a large number of the same extensions. Another drawback is that Most Popular and Top Rated list only the top 100 extensions in each category, which doesn’t seem like many when more than 6,200 extensions are available.
