How to Find a Missing iPad with FindMyiPad
Staring with iOS 4.2, you can take advantage of the FindMyiPad feature to pinpoint the location of your iPad from your computer. This is a very handy feature if you forget where you left your iPad or it is stolen. FindMyiPad not only lets you track down the critter, it lets you wipe off the data contained in it if you have no way to get the iPad back.
Before you lose your iPad, you need to set up FindMyiPad on it. Follow these steps to get this feature set up:
Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap Add Account.
In the MobileMe dialog that appears, enter your Apple ID and password.
At this point, MobileMe might have to verify your ID, which it does by sending an e-mail to your ID e-mail account. Go open the message and click the verify link.
Back in the MobileMe dialog, tap and drag to turn the FindMyiPad feature on.
Now that you've set up FindMyiPad, if you ever lose or misplace your iPad, you'll be able to find it from any computer hooked into the Internet. Go to http://me.com and enter your ID and password. The Find My iPhone screen appears with your iPad's location noted on a map.
To wipe information on the iPad, click the arrow on the information bar for the iPad and click Wipe.
Click Lock to lock out anybody who doesn't have a password.
Click Display a Message or Play a Sound to send whoever has your iPad a note about how to get it back to you or to make your iPad get noisy. If you choose to play a sound, it plays for two minutes, helping you track down anybody who is holding your iPad and within earshot.
