How to Enable Lion Server Printing for Windows Clients
Lion Server can be used to network both Macs and PCs so they can share files and printers. In order to enable Windows clients to discover the server acting as a print server, you turn on printer sharing and then check the workgroup name for your Windows clients.
Turn on print sharing in Lion Server
You use System Preferences to turn on printer sharing:
Open System Preferences and click the Sharing icon.
Select the Printer Sharing check box in the left column.
Printer sharing is now turned on, and you can select a printer to share. You may see printers listed in the lower right. If not, don’t worry about it now.
Edit the workgroup name in Lion Server, if needed
Mac OS X has assigned a workgroup name of Workgroup, which is the default name on all your Windows PCs. If you have an existing network set up and have changed the Windows workgroup name, you can edit it by doing the following:
In System Preferences, click the Show All button and then click the Network icon.
Select the network port on which your clients reside and then click the Advanced button in the lower right.
Click the WINS tab.
Type a new WINS name, if necessary, and then click the OK button.
The NETBIOS name is the same as the server Mac’s computer name.
These settings help Windows PCs discover the server acting as a print server. Alternatively, you can install Apple’s Bonjour for Windows on the PC.
