How to Edit Movies with a Canon EOS Rebel T3 Series Camera

Although it was never intended as a substitute for computer-based video editing software, the Canon Rebel T3 and T3i have an Edit feature that makes it delightfully easy to remove unwanted parts from the beginning or end of a movie right on your camera. This onboard editing is handy but basic, so don’t expect miracles.

Here are the simple steps for trimming the start of a movie:

  1. Display the initial movie playback screen.

  2. Use the cross keys to highlight the Edit icon (it looks like a pair of scissors) and press Set to enter the Editing screen.

  3. Select the Cut Beginning icon.

  4. Press Set.

The bar at the top of the screen becomes active, and a little pair of scissors appears at the left end. The bar indicates the current frame length of the movie.

  5. Press and hold the right cross key to advance frame by frame to the last frame you want to cut.

As you advance through the movie, the little blue triangle indicates the position of the frame within the entire movie.

  6. Press Set.

  7. To save the trimmed movie as a separate file from your original, choose New File.

It’s much safer to save the edited version as a new file. That way, if you ever decide that you did a lousy job (you edited out the cake cutting at your sister’s wedding, for instance), you’ll have your original movie on the memory card to save the day. But if you know you never want the original back, you can choose Overwrite instead.

  8. Press Set.

To trim the end of a movie, follow the same process, but choose Cut End in Step 3.
