How to Defragment a Hard Drive on a Windows XP PC

Defragmenting — or defragging as it is commonly called — your hard drive is a way to speed up the disk performance. If you haven’t defragmented your PC’s hard drive in a while (or ever), you’re in for a treat. A freshly defragmented hard drive makes your computer seem brand new.

To run the Defragmentation utility in Windows XP, follow these steps:

  1. From the My Computer window, right-click the media’s icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.

  2. In the media’s Properties dialog box, select the Tools tab.
