How to Customize Remote Desktop on Your Windows 7 Home Network

You can customize the settings for the Remote Desktop feature on your Windows 7 home network by fine-tuning options in the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box. You can change Windows 7 settings such as display size and color resolution, remote audio settings, and connection speed, among others.

1

From the Start menu, choose All Programs, Accessories, Remote Desktop Connection.

The Remote Desktop Connection dialog box appears.

2

Type the public IP address of the remote computer connection you wish to customize and click Options.

The Options settings appears in the lower-left corner of the dialog box. On the General tab, you can enter your username and save your credentials. You can also save your connection settings.

3

Click the Display tab and change any desired settings.

On the Display tab, you can resize the desktop display and change the color resolution.

4

Click the Local Resources tab and change any desired settings.

On the Local Resources tab, you can configure remote audio settings (play and record audio from the remote computer), configure the remote keyboard, and choose devices and resources (such as printers and the clipboard) that you want to use on the remote computer.

5

Click the Programs tab and change any desired settings.

On the Programs tab, you can configure certain programs to automatically start when you connect to a Remote Desktop session.

6

Click the Experience tab and change any desired settings.

On the Experience tab, you can select your network or Internet connection speed to optimize the performance of your Remote Desktop session, enable or disable certain Windows desktop settings, and enable automatic reconnection if your Remote Desktop session is dropped.

7

Click the Advanced tab and change any desired settings.

On the Advanced tab, you can configure Server authentication options, and configure Remote Desktop Gateway settings for better security of your remote sessions.

8

Click the General tab, and then click Save or Save As under Connection Settings. Specify a name if prompted.

This step will save your customized Remote Desktop settings.

If you connect to a VPN before establishing a Remote Desktop session, all of your network traffic will be encrypted and you can connect to your computers remotely using their computer name or private IP address (instead of having to use a public IP address).
