How to Crochet a Vest with a Floral Motif
Make this beautiful crochet vest with a floral motif that looks like a crocheted daisy garden. Or, crochet the vest in various colors for a "wild flower" feel. Either way, the cotton yarn suggested is wonderfully soft and easy to work with.
Here are the materials you need and vital statistics for this project:
Yarn: Paton’s Grace 4-ply fingering-weight yarn (100% cotton), Article #246060 (1.75 oz. [50 gm], 136 yds. each ball):
1 skein of #60603 Apricot (A)
2 (3) skeins of #60005 Snow (B)
2 (3) skeins of #60027 Ginger (C)
Hook: Crochet hook size G-6 U.S. or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge: First rnd of motif = 1 1/4 in.; motif = 3 1/2 in. x 3 1/2 in.
Stitches used: Chain stitch (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), triple crochet (tr)
Directions are for child’s size 6–8. Changes for adult sizes 8–12 are in parentheses. Finished bust = 28 (35) in. Back length = 18 1/2 (21) in.
The schematic shows the finished measurements of the child and adult vests:
Make the motifs (38 for the child size, 52 for the adult) by following this stitch pattern and diagram:
With color A, ch 6 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch.
Ch 3 (first dc), work 11 dc in ring, sl st in top of ch-3 to join (12 dc). Fasten off color A, join color B in top of first ch-3 of rnd.
With color B, ch 1, (sc, ch 9, sc) in top of first ch-3, sc in each of next 2 dc, (sc, ch 9, sc) in next dc, sc in each of next 2 dc , rep from to around (4 ch-9 loops), sl st in first sc to join.
Sl st in first ch-9 loop, ch 1, (3 sc, 2 hdc, 5 dc, 2 hdc, 3 sc) in ch-9 loop, skip next sc, sl st in next sc, skip next 2 sc, sl st in next ch-9 loop, (3 sc, 2 hdc, 5 dc, 2 hdc, 3 sc) in ch-9 loop, skip next sc, sl st in next sc, skip next 2 sc , rep from to around to within last sc, sl st in last sc (4 petals made). Fasten off color B.
With right side of motif facing, join color C in sl st bet any 2 petals, ch 4 (first tr) in sl st bet petals, ch 3, skip first 4 sts on next petal, sc in next hdc, ch 3, skip next 2 dc on petal, sc in next dc at center top of petal, ch 3, skip next 2 dc on petal, sc in next hdc, ch 3, skip next 4 sts on petal, tr in sl st bet next 2 petals, ch 3, skip first 4 sts on next petal, sc in next hdc, ch 3, skip next 2 dc on petal, sc in next dc at center top of petal, ch 3, skip next 2 dc on petal, sc in next hdc, ch 3, skip next 4 sts on petal , rep from to around, sl st in top of first ch-4 to join (16 ch-3 loops).
Ch 1, sc in top of ch-4, 3 sc in next ch-3 loop, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next ch-3 loop, 3 sc in next sc, 3 sc in next ch-3 loop, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next ch-3 loop, sc in next tr , rep from to around omitting last sc from last rep, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off color C.
Now you're ready to assemble the pieces: With a yarn needle, weave in all loose ends for each motif.
Block all motifs.
Using a yarn needle and color C, sew the motifs together with the whipstitch.
Match stitches from corner to corner, working through back loops of the stitches in Rnd 5 of the motifs. Follow this construction chart for the appropriate size.
Sew fronts to back across the shoulders.
Now you're ready for finishing touches, like the vest edging: With right side of vest facing you, join color C in center back top of vest at neck edge, ch 1, sc evenly around outside edge of vest, sl st in first sc to join.
Armhole edging: With right side of vest facing you, join color C in lower edge of armhole, ch 1, sc evenly around entire armhole, sl st in first sc to join.
Repeat the armhole edging (Steps 8 and 9) around the other armhole.
Front ties: With right side of vest facing you, join color C in outside corner at top of front, ch 50 (75).
Repeat on the other side of front.
Tassel: Cut three 5-inch lengths each of colors A, B, and C.
Holding all lengths together as one, fold in half.
Cut two more 6-inch lengths of color C.
Using one 6-inch length of yarn, tie the bundle securely together around the center fold, leaving equal lengths on each side.
With the bundle folded in half, wrap the second length of yarn several times around folded bundle approximately 3/4 inch below folded end.
Tie tightly to secure.
Using the remaining ends of yarn from the first tie at the center-top of the tassel, tie to the end of the front tie.
Repeat Steps 14 through 20 to make a second tassel for the other front tie.
