A single-crochet rib turtleneck collar will keep you cozily warm in winter. Crochet collars come in many designs, but this single-crochet rib turtleneck collar is a simple one to begin with.

  1. With the hook you used to make the body of your sweater, join the yarn with a slip stitch in one shoulder seam.

  2. Chain (ch) 1 and single crochet (sc) evenly around the neck opening. Slip stitch (sl st) in the first single crochet to join.

This first round of single crochet stitches creates a solid base from which to work the rib.

  3. Change to the next smaller size hook than the one you used for the body of the sweater, and chain 41.

The length of the chain determines the depth of the collar.

  4. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and then single crochet in each chain stitch across (40 single crochet stitches).

  5. Slip stitch in the next free single crochet stitch on the neck edge, turn.

  6. Working across the single crochet stitches just made, single crochet in the back loop of each single crochet across (40 single crochet stitches), turn.

  7. Chain 1 and then single crochet in the back loop of each single crochet stitch across.

  8. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 around the neck edge.

  9. Fasten off your yarn, leaving a sewing length.

The sewing length should be long enough to join the two edges of the collar.

  10. Using a yarn or tapestry needle and the sewing length, sew the last row of the rib to the first row of the rib.

Fold the top edge of the rib down toward the right side of the sweater to form the turtleneck.
