How to Crochet a Buttonhole

Crocheting buttonholes is easy. Crochet buttonholes right into the body of the garment if your design doesn’t have front plackets. When you crochet a buttonhole into a sweater, you use single crochet and work the buttonholes vertically.

Remember which side you’re on! On women’s garments, the buttonholes are on the right side of the shirt when you’re wearing it; on men’s clothes, the buttonholes are on the left. Hold up the garment to yourself and note which side the buttonholes will be on.

  1. When you’re ready to begin the designated row for the bottom of the buttonhole, chain (ch) 1 to start the new row. Single crochet (sc) in each of first 3 stitches, and then turn, leaving the remaining stitches of the row unworked.

  2. Chain 1 and then single crochet in each stitch across the first half of the buttonhole, turn.

  3. Repeat Step 2.

  4. Fasten off the yarn and, with the right side facing you, skip 1 single crochet and rejoin the yarn on the other side to begin making the second side of the buttonhole.

Remember to rejoin the yarn so that you work in the same direction as the other side; otherwise, you end up with a different stitch pattern. If the first row of the buttonhole row is worked with the right side of your work facing you, make sure that when you rejoin your yarn to work the second side, the right side of your work is also facing you.

  5. Chain 1 and single crochet in each stitch across the remainder of the front, turn.

  6. Work 3 more rows of single crochet across, ending with a wrong side row at the top of the buttonhole.

  7. Chain 1, skip the space for the buttonhole, and single crochet in each of the next 3 single crochets on the first side of the buttonhole.
