How to Create an Internet Hyperlink in Word 2007

You can set Word 2007 to automatically create Internet hyperlinks in a document. With this auto-link–creation setting, Word looks for text that looks like a URL and then underlines, colors, and activates the link (makes it hot) so all a reader has to do is click the link to go to that Web site.

1

Click the Office button.

Start here to get the hyperlink magic going.

2

From the Office menu that opens, click the Word Options button at the bottom right.

Open Word Options.

3

In the Word Options window that opens, click the Proofing option (left column).

Set proofing preferences here.

4

In the Display window that opens, click the AutoCorrect Options button (upper right.)

This opens the AutoCorrect dialog box, where you can tweak what Word 2007 automatically corrects and formats.

5

In the AutoCorrect dialog box that opens, click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

On this tab, you can enable auto-hyperlinks.

6

In the Replace As You Type section, select the Internet and Network Path with Hyperlinks check box.

Enable hyperlinks via this check box.

7

Still in the AutoCorrect dialog box that opens, click the AutoFormat tab.

Enable hyperlinks here, too.

8

In the Replace section, select the Internet and Network Path with Hyperlinks check box.

Enable hyperlinks.

Make sure to enable hyperlinks on both the AutoFormat As You Type and the AutoFormat tabs of the AutoCorrect dialog box.

To return to your Word 2007 document, click OK to leave the AutoCorrect dialog box and then click OK again to leave Word Options.

I do all this and instead of an email address in blue underlined as typical hyperlinks look I get the following: {HYPERLINK "mailto:abcd@xyz.com"} There is no link, clicking on this takes you no where.

@Don: It looks like you have the field codes showing. The solution is simple: Click the MS Office button and then click Word Options at the bottom. Go to the Advanced section on the left, and then scroll down until you see the "Show document content" section. You need to uncheck the option called "Show field codes instead of their values" and then click OK. That should fix things.

When I create hyperlinks, it is automatically linking to the document on my computer, not in the web. When I manually type it in and hit ok, it changes it back to the folder on my computer.
