How to Correct White Balance in Digital Wedding Photographs

If you’re new to digital photo editing, you may not know where to start on any particular photo from your wedding shoot. Starting with white balance allows you to adjust the overall color of your image. The goal of adjusting white balance is to get your photo to look the way your own eyes saw the scene.

Though DSLRs today are really smart, sometimes they still miss the mark when it comes to white balance. You’ve probably seen this problem reveal itself in images with a color cast, or tint, that doesn’t look right. Follow these steps to correct white balance:

  1. Open Lightroom and select the photo you want to edit by double-clicking on the thumbnail of the picture or highlighting the image in the filmstrip (the row of small photos that appears at the bottom of your screen).

  2. Click on the Develop module on the top right-hand corner of your screen.

  3. Click on the Basic panel on the right-hand side of the screen and select a preset from the White Balance (WB) list.

You can choose from several presets: As Shot, Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash, and Custom. Select the preset that coincides with the type of lighting in which you took the picture. For example, if you took the photo under a fluorescent light, select Fluorescent. Or if you’d like to adjust the white balance manually with a slider, select Custom.

  4. If the color in your image still looks inaccurate, move the Temp slider until the color looks correct.

Moving the slider to the right adds yellows and reds to your photo, making the light warmer, and moving the slider to the left adds blue to the photo, making the light cooler.

  5. If is the photo still has a color cast, you can tweak the image further by adjusting the Tint.

Moving the slider to the right adds purple tones to the image, whereas moving the slider to the left adds greens.
