How to Convert between Degrees and DMS

On the TI-83 Plus graphing calculator, you can use the functions housed in the Angle menu to convert between rectangular and polar coordinates. They also allow you to convert between degrees and DMS (degrees, minutes, and seconds). You can override the angle setting in the Mode menu of the calculator when you use these functions.

For example, if the calculator is in Radian mode and you want to enter an angle measure in degrees, there is a function in the Angle menu that allows you to do so.

How to convert between degrees and DMS on the TI-83 Plus

To convert degrees to DMS (degrees, minutes, seconds), follow these steps:

  1. Put the calculator in Degree mode.

  2. If necessary, press [2nd][MODE] to access the Home screen.

  3. Enter the degree measure.

How to entering angles in DMS measure on the TI-83 Plus

To enter an angle in DMS measure:

  1. Enter the number of degrees and press [2nd][APPS][1] to insert the degree symbol. (On the TI-83, press [2nd][MATRX][1].)

  2. Enter the number of minutes and press [2nd][APPS][2] to insert the symbol for minutes. (On the TI-83, press [2nd][MATRX][2].)

  3. Enter the number of seconds and press [ALPHA][+] to insert the symbol for seconds.

How to override the mode of the angle

If the TI-83 Plus calculator is in Radian mode but you want to enter an angle in degrees, enter the number of degrees and then press [2nd][APPS][1] to insert the degree symbol. (On the TI-83, press [2nd][MATRX][1].)

If the calculator is in Degree mode and you want to enter an angle in radian measure, enter the number of radians and then press [2nd][APPS][3] to insert in the radian-measure symbol. (On the TI-83, press [2nd][MATRX][3].) If the radian measure is entered as an arithmetical expression, such as
