How to Control Who Tags You on Facebook

Just as you can tag your Facebook friends, friends can tag you in their photos and posts, depending on your settings. To control who can tag you and who can see those tags, click Edit Settings beside the label How Tags Work on the Facebook Privacy page to open the How Tags Work dialog box.

There are five settings here. To edit any of them, click On/Off or drop-down menu to the right of the setting:

  • Timeline Review: Timeline Review allows you to review the tags people have added of you before it gets displayed on your timeline. By default, tags of you are automatically approved, so if you would like to manually approve each one, you have to turn Timeline Review on. Click the text in this section to open the Timeline Review pop-up box. Use the drop-down menu to select Enabled or Disabled. Click the Back button to return to the How Tags Work box.

Tags that need to be reviewed can be found in the Pending Posts section of your Activity Log on your timeline.

  • Tag Review: This setting lets you control whether you review tags your friends want to add to content you’ve uploaded. Click the text or On/Off to go to the Turn on Tag Review box. Use the drop-down menu to select Enabled or Disabled. Click the Back button to return to the How Tags Work box. If you don’t turn this on, you will still be notified of tags your friends add, and you can always remove tags after the fact if you don’t like them.

You always need to approve tags from non-friends before they can be added to your timeline.

  • Maximum Timeline Visibility: After you’ve approved tags (or if you leave Timeline Review off), you can still decide who can see the content in which you’re tagged on your timeline. In other words, if your friend tags you in a photo, you can control who sees that photo on your timeline. Clicking the drop-down menu opens the Audience Selector.

  • Tag Suggestions: Facebook employs some facial recognition software to help people tag photos. So if a friend is uploading 50 photos and you appear in 30 of them, Facebook might recognize your face and suggest to your friend that you be tagged in those 30 photos to save your friend time while he’s adding photos. You can choose not to appear in the suggestions Facebook gives your friends by disabling this setting. Click in this section to open the Tag Suggestions box. Use the drop-down menu to select Enabled or Disabled. Click the Okay button to return to the How Tags Work box.

  • Friends Can Check You into Places: Places is a Facebook feature that allows people to check in or mark where they are using their phones’ GPS systems. Because information about where you are at any given time is very sensitive, you can block friends from tagging you when they check in somewhere. Click the text in this section to go to the Friends Can Check You into Places box. Use the drop-down menu to enable or disable the ability of friends to tag you in check-ins. Click Okay to go back to the How Tags Work box.
