How to Configure Lion Mail Service with Server Admin’s Settings Window

You can also use Lion Server’s Server Admin’s Settings window to set up or make changes to mail service. You can make a few more setting changes in Server Admin Settings that you can’t make in the Configuration Assistant, including assigning a Push Notification Server and limiting the maximum number of simultaneous IMAP connections.

Here’s how to use the Settings window for configuring e-mail service:

  1. In Server Admin, click the triangle to the left of your server to expand the list of services.

  2. Click Mail in the list, click the Settings icon in the toolbar, and then click the General tab.

  3. Type your domain name and hostname in the fields near the top.

  4. Select the Enable SMTP and Allow Incoming Mail check boxes, if they’re not selected already.

  5. If your ISP or organization requires that you use a mail relay server, select the Relay Outgoing Mail through Host check box and type the domain name of the host.

  6. If a name and password are required for the relay server, type them.

  7. Select the Enable IMAP or Enable POP check box, or both, if they’re not selected already.

  8. Click the Save button in the lower right.

  9. Click the Start Mail button, if Mail isn’t already running.

    Your Mail service is now configured.

A few other options are available for your use. Here are those options and what they can do for you:

  • Push Notification Server: This is useful for iPhone, iPad, and notebook clients. Instead of requiring the user to check for e-mail, push notification goes to the mobile device to tell it that mail has arrived. Before you select this option, you need to have the Push Notification Server turned on in the Settings tab of the Server app’s Server pane.

  • Hold Outgoing Mail: You can use this setting for troubleshooting or to queue mail while you solve another problem. Users can still send mail, but the server holds it, so mail messages won’t be sent to their destinations. Queued mail is sent when you deselect this setting.

  • Allow Incoming Mail: Block inbound messages by deselecting this option. Incoming e-mail messages are bounced back to the servers they came from.

  • Copy Undeliverable Mail To: Selecting this option sends problem outgoing e-mail to an e-mail address, typically for an administrator.

  • Copy All Mail To: Copies all mail to an e-mail address — something you might want to do if you want a single place to search for e-mail for all your users.
