How to Configure Lion Mail Service with Configuration Assistant

Lion Server’s Configuration Assistant is good to use if you aren’t sure where to find a setting. The assistant brings up what you need to configure without you having to look for it; just click through any screens until you find what you need. And it lets you configure more settings than the Server app. Configuration Assistant also provides instructions.

Note that mail service doesn’t have to be running, just enabled. Here’s how to use the Configuration Assistant:

  1. In Server Admin, click the triangle to the left of your server to expand the list of services.

  2. Click Mail from the list and then click the toolbar’s Overview icon.

  3. Click the Configure Mail Service button in the lower right.

  4. When the Configuration Assistant opens to an introduction screen, click the Continue button.

  5. In the Mail Service: General window that opens, select or deselect the POP, IMAP, and SMTP protocols.

    All are on by default.

  6. Select the Allow Incoming Mail check box to enable Internet e-mail and then type your domain name and server name.

  7. Select the Relay Outgoing Mail through Host check box if you have an SMTP relay.

    The Hold Outgoing Mail check box is a setting you can use for troubleshooting or to queue mail until you solve another problem. The queued mail is sent when you deselect this setting.

  8. Click the Continue button.

    The next window is Filters, for blocking spam and viruses. It is similar to that of the Server app.

  9. Adjust the filter settings and click the Continue button.

    The Security window appears, with choices for encrypting passwords.

  10. Use Kerberos and/or CRAM-MD5 for SMTP and IMAP (for POP, use Kerberos or APOP) and then click the Continue button.

  11. In the next screen that appears, change the default location for mail messages.

    It’s not a bad idea to keep mail data on a hard drive or partition that is not the boot drive, keeping the data safely away from the OS. Also, IMAP databases can grow in size with lots of heavy mail users or if users don’t delete their e-mail. The default location is /Library/Server/Mail/Data mail.

  12. Click the Continue button.

    A confirmation screen appears, listing your settings.

  13. Click the Go Back button to change your settings or click the Continue button to have your settings configured.

    This process also starts mail service if it isn’t already running.

You can come back to the Configuration Assistant any time to make changes. Or you can use the Settings window.
