How to Close the Inbound Windows Vista Firewall Fast

Although you can expect the Windows Vista Firewall to do a pretty good job of keeping out intruders, every Windows user should be able to close the inbound Windows Vista Firewall fast. There are times when you open a Web site or program and you just know that something is suspicious.

For example, if you’re using Windows Live Messenger and you think you clicked a dicey link, or if your disk suddenly starts whirring like a tornado’s twisting in the box, you’re well advised to lock down first and ask questions later because your computer might be under attack.

  1. Choose Start→Control Panel. Click the Security icon.

  2. Click the Check Firewall Status link.

You'll have to click Continue to get through a User Account Control dialog box, then you'll see the main Windows Firewall Settings dialog box.

  3. Check the Block All Incoming Connections box.

    That’s Windows Firewall’s “lockdown” setting.

  4. Click OK to get out of Windows Firewall.

    Windows Firewall locks down.

That’s a whole lotta clickin’, especially if you’re feeling a bit panicked. Maybe Microsoft will figure out how to make a Fast Firewall Lockdown button for the next version of Windows.
