There are two visual settings that fall together as one category in the iPad's Settings window: Brightness & Wallpaper. Adjusting these settings can make your interaction with an iPad easy on the eyes and easy on the battery power.

Setting brightness

Especially when you're using iPad as an e-book reader, you may find a little less brightness in the display reduces strain on your eyes. Also, reducing the brightness can save a little on your iPad's battery life.

To modify the brightness setting, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the Settings icon on the Home screen.

Changing the wallpaper

Just as your desktop computer or laptop has the ability to display a pretty picture or pattern as a desktop background, your iPad can display an image on the Home screen.

The picture of a mountain lake that's the default iPad image may be pretty, but it's also pretty dark. Choosing different wallpaper may help you to see all the icons on your Home screen, or just allow you to display an image that appeals to your artistic sensibilities.

To change the wallpaper, do this:

  1. Tap the Settings icon on the Home screen, and then, in the Settings dialog, tap Brightness & Wallpaper.

  2. In the Brightness & Wallpaper settings that appear, tap the arrow to the right of the Wallpaper section.
