How to Change a Belt on a Blender, Mixer, or Food Processor

When a blender, mixer, or food processor stops running completely, it usually means that the motor is bad. If you’ve tested the plug, cord, and switch and know the problem doesn’t originate there, the motor is bad. Replace the appliance.

You’re working with electricity, which can be very dangerous! Wires wrapped in black are always hot or power wires. It doesn’t matter if you find them in a wall socket, power cord, appliance, lamp, or anywhere else. That’s where the voltage comes from. The white wire you see is always the neutral and the green or bare wire is the ground. So be careful to differentiate between them.

If the motor runs, but the blades don’t, the belt may need replacing. You can put in a new belt. Here’s how:

  1. Unplug the appliance and take off all accessories.

  2. Lay it sideways on the table or counter.

  3. Take the top off by removing screws between it and the bottom.

  4. Look for hidden screws in the middle of any of the legs and take them out too.

Sometimes there may be screws under a nameplate. Pry it up and remove them.

  5. After you’ve exposed the base and the belt, loosen the bracket screw — do not take the screw off.

  6. Take the belt off after loosening it by shifting the bracket.

  7. Get an exact replacement from an appliance parts store and put it on your appliance.

  8. Reassemble the appliance.
