How to Categorize a Contact on Your Joomla Site

When the contact information on your Joomla site is organized into groups, it becomes both easy to manage for you and easy to navigate for your user. That’s what the Joomla Category Manager: Contacts page is for.

To open the Contact Manager: Categories page, choose Components→Contacts→Categories in any back-end page. The Contact Manager page opens. Now, click the Categories tab near the top-left side of the window.

As you can see, the Category Manager Contacts page comes with a number of categories that were included as part of your Joomla installation’s sample data. The categories include the cleverly named Sample Data-Contact, Park Site, Shop Site, Staff, and a category for every letter of the alphabet that you can use to organize your newly created contacts.

Most likely, you’ll end up either deleting or ignoring these freebies in favor of creating categories that reflect the needs of your Joomla site.

However, for the sake of this exercise, pretend that you have a deep yearning to enter a contact into one of the preexisting categories that came with your Joomla installation. To do so, follow these steps.

  1. Choose Components→Contacts→Contacts in any back-end page.

    The Contact Manager page opens.

  2. Locate the contact you wish to place in a new category.

  3. Click on the name of the contact you want to place in the new category.

    Contact Manager: Contact page opens.

  4. In the Edit Contact Pane, click on the Category drop-down menu and select a Category to place it in.

For this exercise, choose the category that shares the letter of your selected contact’s first name. For example, if your contact’s first name is Jake, choose J as the category.

  5. Click the Save & Close button.

You return to the Contact Manager: Contacts page.

Has the contact been placed into the proper category? You bet. From the filter bar, click the Select Category drop-down menu and select the category under which you filed your contact. Joomla filters out any contacts that not included in the category you’ve selected. Lo and behold, there’s the contact you’ve created and sitting in the category you assigned it to. Congratulations — you’re an organizational genius!
