How to Attract Media Coverage as a Mom Blogger

Getting your name or blog in front of hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of people is a huge achievement; as you might expect, it’s not easily accomplished. It takes a lot of time, work, and credibility to get mentioned in the New York Times or to appear on the Today Show.

Although it’s probably obvious that nobody is going to get into the paper or on TV after a few weeks of blogging, that’s pretty much where the obvious part ends. Getting on TV might take years of taking frustratingly small baby steps from being a blogging nobody to becoming an actual Somebody.

Here are some of the things that will help you to get media coverage — but keep in mind that this is not a formula you can follow down to the letter. The following tips are more like general guidelines that will increase your chances of getting media coverage:

  • Know what you are talking about: Journalists or producers aren’t going to put you in the spotlight if you aren’t knowledgeable in your chosen field. Doing so would make them look bad — it’s your job to make them look good.

  • Look and act professional: When they put you and your blog in front of their readers or listeners, they want you to look as credible as you are on the inside. This includes your physical appearance, your blog, and your public interactions in places like Twitter or Facebook.

  • Be unique: It’s the media’s job to tell a story. If your blog is difficult to distinguish from hundreds of other blogs on the same topic, there’s no story to tell.
