How to Apply the Twenty Ten Theme in WordPress

The default theme in WordPress, Twenty Ten lets new users apply a clean-looking theme that utilizes many of the built-in display features standard to a basic WordPress install. These display features include the ability to use different header images (such as your own custom header graphics), change the background colors and images, and build custom navigation menus easily with the Custom Menu feature.

1

In the WordPress Dashboard, choose Pages→Add New.

The Add New Page page opens so that you can create a new page on your WordPress website.

2

Add your page title and content into the corresponding areas.

The Twenty Ten theme offers a clean design style that’s highly customizable for the millions of WordPress users who want a simple look that focuses on the content for their sites. As such, the font is sharp and easy to read. Many of the new built-in theme features allow you to make simple, yet elegant, tweaks to the theme, including uploading new feature images and adjusting the background colors.

3

Choose the layout that best suits your content.

The default Twenty Ten theme gives you two layout choices by using page templates that come with it: two-column default layout and one-column page layout. The two-column layout — one of the most common layouts for blogs and used more and more on general websites — is the default, and it includes a content area on the left, a widget-ready sidebar on the right, and a footer area with four widget-ready spaces.

The one-column layout comes in very handy for product sales pages, e-mail subscription form pages, photography or portfolio pages, and other content that you don’t want bothered by distractions of content within the sidebar.

Choose One Column, No Sidebar from the Template drop-down list.

The drop-down list is located under the Page Attributes heading on the right. The one-column page template is applied to the page you’re creating.

5

Click the Publish button.

Your new page saves and publishes to your site with the one-column layout assigned to it.
