How to Adjust Your PC Monitor’s Display

If you have the time, you can spend the better part of a day adjusting various features of your computer monitor’s display. How you adjust your monitor’s display depends on the type of monitor you have. They tend to fall into two categories:

  • On-screen display: Locate a main adjustment button, sometimes labeled Menu, on your monitor. Pressing that button pops up an on-screen display, such as the one shown in this figure. You then use additional buttons — plus, minus, up, down — to select items from the menu and use possibly even more buttons to adjust values.

Although the features you can adjust are numerous, the knobs used to make the adjustments aren’t. Typically, you use between three and five buttons to adjust all your monitor's technical features.

  • Monitor buttons: If you're lucky, your monitor doesn’t use the on-screen menu system but, ideally, has a row of buttons that control individual monitor settings, such as those shown in this figure. Use these buttons to adjust what the icons represent. Sometimes, you have to press more than one button to make a specific adjustment.

Most monitors have a Save or Store button, which remembers the settings you’ve entered and makes them permanent. Use it.

Suggestion 1: Don't turn your monitor off. Suggestion 2: Buy a new monitor. Suggestion 3: Visit the Support section of the monitor's manufacturer's Web site. If you don't find an answer there, and the monitor isn't too horribly old, try contacting customer service directly. Errors can and do happen in manufacturing, so you might actually have a defective monitor that they could either fix or replace.
