How to Adjust Etsy Photos in Picnik

You are a craft-person or artist selling goods on Etsy, not a professional photographer, but if you take photos and upload them to Picnik, you can make adjustments to your photo's exposure. After all, the better it looks, the better it will sell. Suppose that your photo is a little bit dark. Or maybe your subject is slightly washed out. In either case, you can adjust its exposure. Here's how:

  1. Log in to Picnik and select the image you want to edit.

  2. Click the Exposure button.

    Picnik displays several exposure-related settings.

  3. Click the Auto-Fix button; alternatively, drag the Exposure and Contrast sliders to adjust the image manually.

If you don't like how the image looks with the new settings applied, click the Reset button. Otherwise.

Tweaking the colors in your photo can add a touch of vibrancy. Here's how it's done:

  1. Click the Colors button.

    Picnik displays several color-related settings.

  2. Click the Auto Colors button; alternatively, drag the Saturation and Temperature sliders to adjust the image manually.

If you don't like how the image looks with the new settings applied, click the Reset button.

If you've captured some extraneous items in your image, or you simply want to focus it more tightly on your piece, you can crop it. Here's the drill:

  1. Click the Crop button.

A movable, resizable box appears over your image, and various crop-related settings appear.

  2. The area of the image outside the box will be cropped from the image. To move the box, click inside it and drag it until it covers the part of the image you want to keep.

To resize the box, click any of its four edges and drag inward or outward; to resize the box but keep its proportions intact, click any of its four corners and drag inward or outward.

If you don't like how the image looks with the new settings applied, click the Reset button.

Product images bound for your Etsy shop must be at least 430 pixels wide. If they aren't, Etsy stretches them to fit, which makes them look blurry. Note that we said at least 430 pixels wide; for best results, opt for an image that's between 800 and 1,000 pixels wide.

To ensure that all your hard work doesn't go to waste, you must save your edited photo. Follow these steps:

  1. Click the Save and Share tab.

Settings for saving your image appear.

  2. In the File Name field, type a descriptive name for the image file; then double-check the photo's size and format.

A dialog box opens where you can indicate where you want to save your image.

If your image file is too large, you'll have a hard time uploading it to Etsy when you create the item listing in which the photo will appear. For this reason, when you save your image in Picnik, you must ensure that it's no larger than 250KB and doesn't exceed 1,000 pixels by 1,000 pixels. One more pointer: Your image needs to be a JPG, GIF, or PNG file; Etsy doesn't support other file types.

  3. Locate and select the folder where you want to save your image; then click the Save button.

Picnik saves your image in the folder you chose.
