Fringe is a popular crochet embellishment for scarves, afghans, and shawls. Crocheted pieces sometimes have unsightly end rows, and fringe is a great way to hide them for a nice finishing touch. Fringe looks best when it’s fluffy and full, so, depending on the type of yarn you use, combine several strands for each fringe or use whatever number on the pattern instructions.
Cut the yarn into the required number of equal lengths.
For example, if each fringe has 3 strands of yarn, and you have 20 stitches across the edge that you’re attaching the fringe to, then you need 60 lengths of yarn, all equal in length.
Fold the strands of yarn for one fringe in half, forming a loop at one end.
Match the cut ends of the yarn on the other end.
Take your hook and draw the loop through the stitch that you’re attaching the fringe to.
Work from the right side of the fabric.
Draw the loose ends of the yarn through the loop.
This step creates the knot
Holding the top of the fringe in one hand, pull gently on the fringe ends with your other hand.
Tighten the knot so that it’s secure.
To finish, trim the ends of the fringe so that they’re even.
You’ve completed one single-knot fringe.
