How to Activate (or Deactivate) WordPress Plugins

When you install a plugin within WordPress, the plugin must be activated, or switched on, before it can be used. Activating and deactivating your WordPress plugins is a simple process that you can perform within the WordPress Dashboard.

Although WordPress plugins are fun and useful tools that help you manage your content, control posts, or just entertain your users, you may find you want to suspend the use of a plugin without actually uninstalling it. Deactivation makes this simple. You keep the plugin in case you change your mind, but disable it. Reactivation, when you decide you want to use it again, is simple and easy.

To activate and deactivate a plugin, follow the steps shown here:

1

Log in to the WordPress Dashboard and choose Plugins.

A list of installed plugins shows which plugins need activating.

Make sure that you see all the plugins; if not, click the All link under the Plugins page title.

2

Scroll to the plugin you want to activate.

The Activate link appears beneath the name of your plugin.

3

Click the Activate link.

The Plugins page appears with a message confirming that the plugin was activated.

4

To deactivate a plugin, click the Deactivate link.

The process of activating and deactivating plugins is very simple within the WordPress Dashboard. Remember to watch for error messages and follow the plugin developer’s support instructions when you need help.
