Getting Song Information from the Internet in iTunes

iTunes retrieves song information (the song's name, the recording artist, the album it was on, and so on) from the Internet. You can set iTunes to get the information automatically, or you can retrieve it manually. The online database available for iTunes users holds information for millions of songs.

Letting iTunes get song information automatically

  1. Choose iTunes→Preferences (Mac) or Edit→Preferences (Windows).

The iTunes Preferences dialog appears with buttons along the top.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.

The Advanced preferences and tabs appear.

  3. Click the Importing tab in the Advanced preferences.

    The Advanced Importing preferences appear.

  4. Select the Automatically Retrieve CD Track Names from Internet option.

With this option turned on, iTunes connects to the Internet automatically and retrieves the track information.

Getting song information manually

Any time you connect to the Internet, you can retrieve song information. After you connect to the Internet, choose Advanced→Get CD Track Names.

Even if you automatically connect to the Internet, the song information database on the Internet (Gracenote CDDB) might be momentarily unavailable, or you might have a delayed response. If at first you don’t succeed, choose Advanced→Get CD Track Names again.
