Companion Content for the E-Book Pay Less Tax On Your Income In A Day For Canadians For Dummies
If you use public transportation in Canada, you may be able to offset the cost of your transit pass with this non-refundable credit. The federal tax credit, or federal tax savings, is the eligible amount you spent multiplied by 15 percent.

The credit applies when you
Purchase public transit passes with a duration of a month or longer
Purchase four consecutive weekly passes and each pass entitles you to unlimited use for at least five days each week.
Purchase via electronic payment cards if you use the card for at least 32 one-way trips during an uninterrupted period of no more than 31 days.
Public transit includes transit by local bus, streetcar, subway, commuter train, commuter bus, and local ferry. The credit can be claimed by you or your spouse for eligible transit costs incurred by you, your spouse, or dependent children under the age of 19.
If this credit applies to you, be sure to keep your receipts and passes in case the CRA asks for proof — they like to review the support for this credit.
