On the GED Mathematical Reasoning test, the process for solving an inequality is very similar to solving any equation; you try to isolate the variable on one side of the inequality symbol, solve for the variable, and simplify if possible.

Here are some practice questions to get you started.

Practice questions

  1. Solve 3x + 7 < 4x – 8

    A. x < 1

    B. x > –1

    C. x > 15

    D. x < 15

  2. Solve 5xb < 7xb

Answers and explanations

  1. C.

To answer this question, treat the inequality as you would an equation. Get the variables on one side of the symbol and the constants on the other and then simplify:

  2. x > 0

This one is tricky because at the end you must divide both sides by –2, meaning that you must flip the inequality sign.
